Iridescent Shark

The Iridescent Shark (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), also known as the Pangasius Catfish, brings a silvery sheen and constant movement to a suitably spacious freshwater setup. Despite its shark-like appearance, it is a catfish native to Southeast Asia’s Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems.

Before you buy: This is a giant, active species for experienced keepers with a permanent, exceptionally large setup. It is not suitable for a typical home aquarium.

Size & long-term space

• Listed size options: 2-inch, 3-inch and 4-inch juveniles. Select your preferred size above.
• Adult size: Can exceed 4 feet, reaching approximately 51 inches (130 cm). Plan for its adult size, not its size at purchase.
• Adult housing: Specialist care guidance recommends an enclosure at least 15 feet long × 6 feet wide × 6 feet high for a single adult, approximately 3,850 US gallons. Groups need substantially more space. A smaller juvenile grow-out tank is not permanent housing.

Temperament & compatibility

Generally non-aggressive but easily startled, with powerful bursts of swimming. Keep the surroundings calm and leave generous open swimming space. Small fish and other tankmates that fit in its mouth may be eaten. Choose large, peaceful companions; avoid aggressive fish and shy or slow-moving species that may be disturbed by its activity. This is a naturally shoaling species, so social needs must also be considered alongside the enormous space required for a group.

Care & feeding

• Water: Freshwater at 72–79°F (22–26°C), with pH 6.5–7.5.
• Setup: Provide strong biological filtration, well-oxygenated water, open swimming space and a secure, heavy cover. Use smooth, securely positioned decor to reduce injury if startled.
• Diet: An omnivore that eats animal and plant material. Provide a varied diet suitable for large omnivorous catfish.
• Ongoing care: Maintain stable water conditions and plan filtration and maintenance around the substantial waste load of a growing giant fish.
