The Hi-Fin Banded Loach (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) is a freshwater fish native to the Yangtze River basin in China, known for its striking appearance when young, with a gold or brown body and distinct dark vertical stripes. It features a prominent, triangular dorsal fin and thick, fleshy lips, but its body shape and color change significantly as it ages. While juveniles have a tall fin and a banded pattern that fades in adulthood, the adults become more elongated with darker coloration, leading to the nickname "ugly duckling in reverse". These peaceful, omnivorous fish are bottom-dwellers and are well-suited for large ponds due to their potential to grow over three feet long.
