Separation Anxiety in Cats
Overview
Although less commonly recognized than in dogs, cats can experience separation anxiety when strongly bonded to caregivers.
Symptoms
- Excessive vocalization when alone
- Following owner constantly when present
- Destructive behavior during absence
- House soiling when left alone
- Refusal to eat when owner absent
Causes
- Over-attachment to single caregiver
- Sudden changes in routine or environment
- Lack of independent coping skills
- Early-life dependency reinforcement
Treatment / Management Plan
- Gradual desensitization to owner absence
- Encourage independent resting zones
- Provide food puzzles during absences
- Avoid overly dramatic departures/returns
