Seizures in Cats (Neurological Emergency)
Overview
Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. In cats, they are often linked to toxins, brain disease, or metabolic disorders.
Symptoms
- Sudden collapse
- Muscle twitching or rigidity
- Paddling movements
- Drooling
- Loss of bladder control
- Confusion after episode
Causes
- Brain tumors
- Toxin exposure
- Epilepsy (rare in cats)
- Liver or kidney disease
- Head trauma
Treatment
- Emergency anti-seizure medication
- IV sedation if prolonged seizure
- Bloodwork and imaging
- Long-term anticonvulsants if recurrent
When to See a Vet
👉 First seizure or seizures lasting >5 minutes.
Prevention
- Avoid toxin exposure
- Treat underlying disease early
- Medication compliance if diagnosed
