Intestinal Obstruction (Foreign Body)
Overview
Cats may swallow objects like string, hair ties, or small toys, causing a blockage in the intestines.
Linear foreign bodies (like string) are especially dangerous and can cause intestinal tearing.
Symptoms
- Repeated vomiting
- No appetite
- Abdominal pain
- Lethargy
- Straining to defecate
Treatment
- X-rays or ultrasound diagnosis
- Endoscopy (if accessible object)
- Emergency surgery (most cases)
- IV fluids and pain control
When to See a Vet
👉 Immediately — obstruction can rapidly become fatal.
Prevention
- Avoid string and small ingestible items
- Supervise play
- Cat-proof environment
