Overview

Cats may swallow objects like string, hair ties, or small toys, causing a blockage in the intestines.

Linear foreign bodies (like string) are especially dangerous and can cause intestinal tearing.


Symptoms

  • Repeated vomiting
  • No appetite
  • Abdominal pain
  • Lethargy
  • Straining to defecate

Treatment

  • X-rays or ultrasound diagnosis
  • Endoscopy (if accessible object)
  • Emergency surgery (most cases)
  • IV fluids and pain control

When to See a Vet

👉 Immediately — obstruction can rapidly become fatal.


Prevention

  • Avoid string and small ingestible items
  • Supervise play
  • Cat-proof environment
