Hyperthyroidism
Overview
Hyperthyroidism is a hormonal disorder caused by overproduction of thyroid hormone, usually due to a benign thyroid tumor. It speeds up metabolism, leading to weight loss and organ strain.
Symptoms
- Weight loss despite increased appetite
- Hyperactivity or restlessness
- Increased thirst
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Rapid heart rate
- Poor coat condition
Causes
- Benign thyroid adenoma (most common)
- Rare malignant thyroid tumors
- Environmental and dietary factors (suspected links)
Treatment
- Oral medication (methimazole)
- Radioactive iodine therapy (curative in many cases)
- Surgical thyroid removal (selected cases)
- Prescription iodine-restricted diet
Prognosis
Excellent with treatment; untreated cases can lead to heart failure.
