Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1)

Overview

Feline herpesvirus is a lifelong viral infection that remains dormant in the nervous system and reactivates during stress or illness. It is one of the most common causes of chronic respiratory disease in cats.

Symptoms

  • Recurrent sneezing
  • Chronic eye inflammation
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Nasal congestion
  • Reduced appetite during flare-ups

Causes

  • Early-life infection (very common in kittens)
  • Stress (boarding, new environment, illness)
  • Immune suppression

Treatment

  • Antiviral medications (famciclovir)
  • L-lysine supplementation (supportive, debated efficacy)
  • Eye medications for corneal disease
  • Stress reduction is critical

Prognosis

Lifelong management; not curable but controllable.
