Overview

Calicivirus is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can also cause oral disease and joint inflammation in cats.

Some strains can cause severe systemic disease.


Symptoms

  • Sneezing and nasal discharge
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Limping or joint pain
  • Fever
  • Drooling
  • Loss of appetite

Causes

  • Direct cat-to-cat contact
  • Shared food bowls
  • Shelters and boarding facilities

Treatment

  • Supportive care
  • Pain management for oral ulcers
  • Fluids
  • Antibiotics for secondary infections

Prognosis

Most cats recover, but chronic carriers exist.
