Leptospirosis
Overview
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can infect both dogs and humans (zoonotic). It affects the kidneys and liver and is transmitted through contaminated water or wildlife urine.
Symptoms
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Muscle pain
- Jaundice
- Increased thirst
- Kidney failure signs
Causes & Transmission
- Standing water contaminated with wildlife urine
- Rats, raccoons, wildlife carriers
- Urban and rural exposure
Treatment
- Antibiotics (doxycycline, penicillin)
- IV fluids
- Kidney/liver support
- Hospitalization in severe cases
Prognosis
Good if treated early; severe if kidney failure develops.
