Kennel Cough (Infectious Tracheobronchitis)
Overview
Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by multiple bacteria and viruses. It spreads rapidly in kennels, shelters, and dog parks.
Symptoms
- Dry “honking” cough
- Gagging
- Mild fever
- Nasal discharge
- Reduced appetite
Causes & Transmission
- Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria
- Canine parainfluenza virus
- Crowded environments
- Airborne spread
Treatment
- Mild cases: rest and supportive care
- Antibiotics if bacterial involvement
- Cough suppressants
- Nebulization therapy in severe cases
Prognosis
Excellent in most healthy dogs.
