Hookworms
Overview
Hookworms are intestinal parasites that attach to the intestinal wall and feed on blood, leading to anemia and weakness.
Symptoms
- Pale gums
- Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
- Weakness
- Weight loss
- Dark stool
Causes
- Larvae penetration through skin or ingestion
- Contaminated soil
- Mother-to-puppy transmission
Treatment
- Deworming medications (pyrantel, fenbendazole)
- Iron supplementation if anemic
- Environmental sanitation
Prognosis
Excellent with treatment.
