Overview

Hookworms are intestinal parasites that attach to the intestinal wall and feed on blood, leading to anemia and weakness.


Symptoms

  • Pale gums
  • Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
  • Weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Dark stool

Causes

  • Larvae penetration through skin or ingestion
  • Contaminated soil
  • Mother-to-puppy transmission

Treatment

  • Deworming medications (pyrantel, fenbendazole)
  • Iron supplementation if anemic
  • Environmental sanitation

Prognosis

Excellent with treatment.
