Overview
Travel anxiety is a conditioned fear response to motion, confinement, or past negative travel experiences.
Symptoms
- Panting, drooling, trembling in vehicle
- Refusal to enter car
- Vomiting unrelated to motion sickness
- Vocalization during transit
- Attempts to escape crate or seat restraint
Causes
- Negative early car experiences (vet visits only association)
- Motion sensitivity or vestibular discomfort
- Lack of gradual exposure
- Association with stressful destinations
Treatment / Training Plan
- Counterconditioning: Feed high-value treats in parked car
- Short progressive trips (drive → return home)
- Crate or safety harness conditioning
- Calm environment (no loud music, stable temperature)
- Motion sickness evaluation if vomiting present

- Panic behaviors despite repeated exposure
- Aggression in car restraint situations
Prevention
- Early puppy car habituation (non-medical trips only)
