Resource Guarding in Dogs
Overview
Resource guarding is a behavior in which a dog protects food, toys, resting areas, or even people from perceived threats.
Symptoms
- Growling over food bowls or treats
- Stiff body posture over objects
- Freezing when approached while eating
- Snapping when items are removed
- Guarding laps, beds, or toys
Causes
- Survival-based instinct (normal canine behavior exaggerated)
- Inconsistent access to resources
- Competition with other animals
- Punishment during feeding or retrieval
Treatment / Training Plan
- Never forcibly remove guarded items
- Teach “trade-up” behavior using high-value rewards
- Hand-feeding exercises to build trust
- Gradual desensitization to approach during feeding
- Structured feeding environment with no competition
When to Seek Help
- Biting incidents involving food or objects
- Guarding escalation across multiple items
Prevention
- Early positive association with human approach during feeding
- Avoid food bowl intimidation or punishment
