Noise Phobias in Dogs (Thunder, Fireworks)
Overview
Noise phobia is an intense fear response to specific or unpredictable sounds that results in panic-level behavior.
Symptoms
- Hiding, trembling, or escape attempts
- Destructive digging at doors/windows
- Salivation, panting, or urination
- Persistent pacing or vocalization
- Anticipatory anxiety before storms/fireworks
Causes
- Genetic sensitivity to sound
- Lack of early noise exposure
- Traumatic noise event association
- Heightened baseline anxiety disorder
Treatment / Training Plan
- Desensitization audio training (low-volume exposure)
- Create safe “soundproof den” environments
- Pressure wraps (e.g., anxiety vests)
- White noise masking systems
- Behavior modification over medication for severe cases
When to Seek Help
- Panic behaviors causing injury risk
- Phobia worsening across repeated exposures
Prevention
- Puppy noise exposure conditioning
- Controlled early desensitization protocols
