Leash Reactivity in Dogs
Overview
Leash reactivity is an exaggerated behavioral response (barking, lunging) to stimuli such as dogs, people, or vehicles while on leash.
Symptoms
- Lunging at end of leash
- Barking or growling at passing dogs
- High arousal posture (stiff body, fixed stare)
- Inability to disengage from trigger
- Calm behavior when off-leash in same environment
Causes
- Frustration from restricted movement
- Fear-based reactivity
- Lack of social skills with other dogs
- Reinforced barking behavior over time
Treatment / Training Plan
- Increase distance from triggers immediately
- Teach “look at me” and engagement cues
- Reward calm observation of triggers
- Structured counterconditioning walks
- Use front-clip harness or head halter for control
When to Seek Help
- Escalation into bite attempts or uncontrollable lunging
- Inability to safely walk in public areas
Prevention
- Puppy exposure to controlled leash walking environments
- Early impulse control training
